RE Curriculum

We deliver RE lessons weekly, using the Understanding Christianity scheme (https://www.understandingchristianity.org.uk/teachers-and-schools/local-syllabus-discovery-re-schemes-work/) Each unit is introduced through a ‘Big Question’. Each lesson builds through a carefully planned sequence of objectives, to support pupils with reflecting on the Big Question. Lessons refer to the big frieze, created by artist, Emma Yarlett. The frieze is used to support pupils in building coherence about key concepts and how they relate to each other.(https://www.understandingchristianity.org.uk/the-project/the-big-frieze-emma-yarlett/)

Our RE long term plan can be viewed, clicking the button below.

Pupils are also taught about World Faiths. Lessons are progressive and follow the Derby Agreed Syllabus: building-progression-through-your-agreed-re-syllabus.pdf (derbyshire.gov.uk)

The long-term plans set out a clear sequence of learning. Supplementary planning and lesson ideas are taken from: Derbyshire and Derby City Agreed Syllabus for RE

We incorporate the values of the Church of England into our curriculum and daily practice. As a staff we have considered how we ensure we educate for:

wisdom, knowledge and skills: enabling discipline, confidence and delight in seeking wisdom and knowledge, and developing talents in all areas of life.

hope and aspiration: enabling healing, repair and renewal, coping wisely when things go wrong, opening horizons and guiding people into ways of fulfilling them.

community and living well together: a core focus on relationships, participation in communities and the qualities of character that enable people to flourish together.

dignity and respect: the basic principle of respect for the value and preciousness of each person, treating each person as a unique individual of inherent worth. This documents how Coton offers ‘fullness of life’ for all:

RE Assessment

At the start of each unit, we share the Big Question and set out the ‘sticky knowledge’ that outlines the key learning we want pupils to have retained. RE is assessed by reflecting on the Big Question. Pupils complete an activity showing their response to what they have learned. As the curriculum is a spiral curriculum, pupils have several opportunities to revisit key learning and build upon their prior knowledge.
