Music

As musicians, pupils will be provided with an exciting music curriculum, which includes a breadth of opportunities that widen all children’s horizons. At our school we intend that children should master a great understanding and a lifelong love of music. Music is an empowering, exciting topic which develops listening, composing, singing and performing. Our lessons include using instruments, listening to a range of genres of music and developing our voice. All year groups apart from Year 4 use the Kapow scheme to support Music teaching so it follows a progression throughout the school.

Year 4 engage in whole class instrumental lessons, whereby every child is given a flute to learn to play. These lessons are led by a specialist teacher from the Derbyshire music team.

We aim to provide all pupils, regardless of background or ability, with rich musical experiences that cultivate:

  1. Cultural Awareness: Exposure to a diverse range of musical genres and cultural traditions, promoting an appreciation for global music. Children learn about the history of music.
  2. Skill Development: Progressive skill acquisition in singing, instrumental performance, composition, and improvisation, aligned with the Kapow Music Scheme.
  3. Confidence and Collaboration: Opportunities for individuals to perform and work collaboratively, building confidence and social skills through group music-making.
  4. Critical Listening and Evaluation: Development of critical listening skills and the ability to reflect on one’s own work and that of others.

These intentions align with the National Curriculum for Music and the Kapow Music Scheme, designed to enhance the holistic development of all pupils.
