During these difficult times, many families have been subject to dramatic changes in their personal circumstances, resulting in a reduced income.
In school, we are concerned that there may be some families now be eligible for Free School Meals but unsure how to apply or who don’t even know if they are eligible. Families who become eligible now will be protected and continue to receive free meals until March 2022 under a new ruling following the roll out of Universal Credit. Taking up this allowance can save a family budget over £400 for each child every year.
Whilst our school is closed, we are providing alternative free school meal schemes such as packed lunches or supermarket vouchers, which new vulnerable families may be entitled to access.
To enquire if your child is eligible to receive free school meals, please use one of the following methods to contact the Free School Meals team at Derbyshire County Council:
Phone: 01629 536400 or 01629 535743

If your child is in Reception, Year 1 or Year 2, they currently receive ‘Universal Free School Meals’ but they can still be eligible for ‘Free School Meals’ also, of which their eligibility will continue into Juniors, where you would normally start to pay for school meals. The school also benefits from additional funding with the more eligible Free School Meal children we have on roll.
Access to free schools meals provides many benefits to eligible families during these difficult times, including reducing the financial burden of providing regular meals. Children receive the benefit of a consistent source of nutrition, improving concentration and the ability to learn, as well as encouraging them to eat a variety of foods and adopt healthy eating habits.
